Common Wasp Problems

Yellow Jackets

Yellow jackets are aggressive, predatory social wasps that build papery nests made from chewed wood and cellulose. They are often mistaken for honey bees but are mostly hairless and have distinct yellow and black stripes and a very thin waist. They can be beneficial in gardens as they eat pest insects, but are notorious for stinging people when disturbed or while scavenging for food in the warmer months. Thier sting can be extremely painful and are dangerous for those with allegy intolerance.

Paper Wasps

Paper wasps are another type of stinging pest that are likely to pay you visit this summer season. They are very similar to Yellow Jackets but do have some distinct differences and behaviors. Paper Wasps build small honeycomb shaped nests under decks or the eaves of your house. They typically have longer sleder bodies with orange antennae and long legs. They feed on damaged or older fruit and search for nectar in your garden. They are typically less aggresive than a Yellow Jacket but will not hesitate to attack and sting if their nest is disturbed. Paper Wasp stings are exceptionally painful because they can sting multiple times.

Bald Faced Hornets

Bald faced Hornets are notoriously aggressive when it comes to defending their nest. They usually will not attack while they are foraging for food, but if you enter the "Danger Zone" wandering too close to their nest, be prepared for an all out assault from a swarm of hornets. When one hornet stings, it releases a pheromone signaling the rest of the colony to attack. They even have a unique defense mechanism that allows they to spray venom from their stingers where they will often aim for the eyes of their victim. Bald faced hornets can sting repeatedly so being swarmed by a colony is extremely dangerous and potentially even fatal.

Mud Daubers

Mud Daubers are another pest that you may encounter. These look similar to a paper wasp but can be yellow and black or all black. They are a solitary wasp and are typically very docile. A sting from a Mud Dauber is very rare and usually only sting if handled directly or are severely provoked. They will usually feed on spiders or their young, honeydew, and plant nectar. They make nests out of mud that are small cylindrical tubes and typically will build them on walls or overhangs, They are regaurded as helpful to spider control for the ecosystem as spiders are one of their main food sources.
